I have read on a few sites that yiu should strop before and after each shave. But if you strop after a shave, why would you have to strop before the next shave?

If you strop after a shave, I don't see a need to strop before the next shave.   I strop after a shave to make sure there is no residual moisture left on the blade.  I then strop again before the next shave just because I enjoy stropping.  I find stropping a relaxing part of the straight razor ritual.

Yes, ritual is certainly an important component of the whole straight razor shaving experience.
