What if you had more readily access to a brush or a suitable soap while shaving? And what if this more readily access was in a form that was convenient, compact, water proof, and adapted to be carried in your pocket or traveling bag? Well, fear not. William H C Taylor have you covered, with the shaving kit he got a patent for in 1925.
At least he didn’t come up with yet another fountain brush
Instead William H C Taylor came up with a kit in three parts. A shave stick. A retractable brush. And a cylindrical piece that you would insert the shave stick into and attach the brush onto.

Patent drawing from US patent 1,588,633
To help figure out what we’re looking at, let us look at the patent text:
Quote:Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the invention
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same showing the manner 1n which the device is assembled
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional v1ew of the brush projecting out of the receptacle
Figure 4 is a side elevational view similar to Fig. 3, showing the brush in an inoperative position
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view of the brush socket and container, taken on lines V-V of Fig. 1
Figure 6 is a side elevational view of the preferred form of soap used in the shaving kit
Figure 7 is a modification of the soap container showing an arrangement for using powdered soap
In use it would be fairly straight forward. Unscrew the brush from the holder. Extend the brush. Extract the shave stick from the holder. Shave. Rinse the brush, and shake it dry. Withdraw the bush, and reassemble.
When all is said and done, William H C Taylor came up with a simple, convenient, and handy shaving kit. And it wasn’t another repeat of the fountain brush idea.
If someone were to make this today, I may be tempted to pick one up for traveling. I won’t keep it in my vest pocket though… I don’t wear a vest.
The full patent can be read at Google Patents, as usual.
