Last night I was treated to a rather unique experience...We had a meteor that was part of the Halley's Comet debris field that the Earth is currently travelling through come through our neck of the woods very low in the sky. I was able to get a pretty good look at it before it broke up. It was a pretty cool sight! Here is a pic that someone in the area took.

That is incredible. What a picture!

I saw some meteors - no where near that close - last Friday and Saturday nights. On Saturday, I was at a BBQ/birthday party, and had my 4 year old son on my shoulders. We were off in the backyard away from the party, watching the lightning in some storm clouds off in the distance when a "shooting star" flew over our heads. It was a wonderful moment and one that I will cherish for a long time.

I need to spend more time outside at night.

Fortunately I am far enough north that on a clear night during the winter I can see the Northern Lights.

Very cool! I remember when Halley's Comet last passed us by, I even made a Pine Wood Derby car to commemorate it!

Seriously I have to come up and visit some time. It never really gets dark here. So many street lights, so many tall buildings. Most of the stars in the sky are not visible.

When my GF and I were in Iowa a couple of years ago visiting friends, we literally pulled over on this old farm dirt road drove about a mile away from the highway and just sat on the hood of the car looking up at all the stars in the sky.

I haven't seen the northern lights since I was about 5 and I do not remember them.
