OK, I have been using a straight now for over a year and I have to ask a "Strop 101" question.

Do you hold the leather and linen together as you strop on one of them or let the one not being used dangle and swing around?

I hold both together as well, it's annoying to have the bottom strop flap around while I'm trying to strop. As long as you've got proper tension in the strop you're actually stropping on it shouldn't matter though.

Dangle. Too much effort to hold both.

Both. I used to hold one but did not like the other one dangling and swinging.

The few times that i have stropped, i only hold one; i have handles for each material, so it is quite practical.

I hold the one(s) with handles on their own but hold both if it's a barbers end.

i hold both.
in addition to the annoyance others have mentioned, the swinging can cause uneven pressure on the surface you're using, particularly while using the fabric side, since the fabric is thinner and twists more easily when the heavier leather gets swinging.
Also, letting the leather hang can cause wrinkles at the top. Close enough to the end where it shouldn't cause any issues, but doesn't look as nice

I hold one at a time. They are not connected so the one not in use just hangs there.

Good question sir. I am new to straight shaving also and when I strop, I hold both together, as most other members. Not sure that that is the proper or correct manner, but works very well for me. Happy Shaving. Sam.

I remove the linen component and use the rough side of the leather instead.
