I will be flying into Austin, TX. and want to mail some blades over there, I don't want to buy just a 5 or 10 pack I was thinking more like a hundred pack. What blades would you recommend I get if I'm looking for something just as smooth or smoother than the red pack Personnas (I already have a hundred pack of red pack personnas). I have tried feather too sharp, Astra good, derby bad, voshkod good for 1 shave, Crystal ok, Supermax titanium good, Trig too sharp, Merkur horrible.

Along with Astra, I love Gillette Bleue Extras. You can still get them fairly easily from eBay and a few on-line vendors.

Which astra do you like, I have only used the green pack, First time using it and I got a bbs shave, I didn't want to mention because I thought it would create a bias. Never tried the Gillette blues though

The same muddy green label - Astra Superior Platinum

The Bleues are great blades and manufactured in the same St. Petersburg, Russia plant as the legendary Swedes and Iridiums. Some say the same blade but with different coatings (much is written on this if you care to do some research...)

how thick would you say your beard can get, because if it is on the side of think than you're going to want to steer clear of sharks, horrible ATG with tough beards.

I'd go with these.

Perma-Shaprs (the ones that come in the cardboard box, made in Russia). Sharp and smooth.

I go along with all those that said the Gillette 7 O'Clock Blue blades. It's the only blade I use in any of my DE razors.

The 7 O'clock Blues are very nice indeed. The Blacks are excellent as well, if you go for a sampler definitely get a pack of each.

I'm also a big Shark fan, and IMHO they are the best value in blades out there right now.

Whichever Astra you *didn't* try would be one option, the blue pack Gillettes, as stated, and possibly the yellow pack Gillettes.

Here would be some of my suggestions:

Blue 'Lab' or 'Hospital' Personnas. If you like the Reds you should love the Blues
Blue Gillette Platinums - very sharp and smooth.
Lord Platinum Class - I find these very similar to the green pack Astra SPs.

I'll second the Perma-Sharps. Another good Russian blade is Rapira. They are the same company that makes Voshkod.

You can't go wrong with the 7 o'clock blue blades. Yellows are just as good. Might I also suggest Rapira blades. I purchased 100 and they are a great value.
