I received my tub of Black Tie soap from the Strop Shoppe yesterday. I used it today with the Italian Barber Semogue LE Brush which was seeing it's first use as well. I really like the scent it's sort of an old barbershop smell IMO and it's not to strong. This soap lathers so easily. What impresses me the most is how dense the lather is. It has the densest and thickest lather from a soap that I've used but it is still very slick. I can see why Michael Ham (leisureguy) is so crazy about this stuff. One thing that I worry about with Artisan Soaps is the fragrance irritating my skin but that was not an issue at all for me with this soap. I'm curios to see what happens in the following days when I try other brushes such as my SOC 2 Band and broken in Semgoue Boars. Today I used my brand new boar that isn't broken in at all and was still rewarded with an amazing lather. One thing worth mentioning is it did take 2 weeks to get to me. She emailed me saying that she has been slammed with orders from the leisureguy's reviews praising her soap. I discussed this on another thread and a fellow member said according to the leisureguy she also has another job and kids. However, after using this stuff I'm willing to deal with a short wait to get it. This stuff is worth it.

This is how The Strop Shoppe describes this soap on their site:

This scent is a blend of Black Peppercorn, Leather, Woods, Patchouli, Musk, and Citrus.

With our signature scent, you can start your day your way with the classic scent, reminiscent of the time of Sinatra and Bogart.

Using high quality tallow, vegetable glycerin, and natural oils, we have come up with an incredible formula that does not need chemical surfactants, preservatives, or dyes, only natural ingredients and nothing more. The naturally white, dye free pucks foam up using a moderate amount of water to produce a very thick, creamy, lubricating lather which lasts.

Our shaving pucks are larger than 4 ounces, typically around 5 ounces, to ensure that you will get many shaves per puck at a great value. All pucks come in a metal tin for storage.

Ingredients : Stearic Acid, Tallow, Glycerin, Coconut Oil, Fragrance.

Saponifying agents : Potassium Hydroxide, Sodium Hydroxide.

Tonight I used my Semogue Owners Club 2 Band brush with the Black Tie Soap and my lather was even better than yesterdays shave. I think this will be the soap I will be recommending to newbies from now on. It's impossible to screw this one up. Your going to get a fantastic lather very easily regardless of experience or brush.

I see they have a "pure lime from 100% essential oil" and a Peppermint from essential oil as well. I really wonder how these smell as I like lime and Peppermint.

Read on another forum that Black Tie smelled like Polo Blue. Can anyone confirm this? Or provide a better example of the scent? Thanks!

I love Strop Shoppe, but for the life of me can't get a scent from Black Tie. I tend to prefer stronger scents, and it could be that my nose just doesn't detect Black Tie. Their lather is second to none, and I regularly enjoy Baker Street, Barbershoppe, Teak Wood, and Lemon Eucalyptus, but to me Black Tie is almost unscented.

YMMV i couldnt smell much from the tub but once i lathered it i could definatly smell leather and other scents, not the strongest scented but i do smell it and for a little while after the shave i can still pick up hints of it.

Thanks, Triad! And no, I was specifically looking to avoid Polo Blue! Tried some yesterday after I read the comment about it and Black Tie. Absolutely do not like the scent of Polo Blue. (My apologies to all Polo Blue fans)

I don't own Polo Blue, but I have sniffed it a few times. I don't think it smells much like Polo, Polo Blue, Polo Black, or Big Pony 3.

I'd call it a more old fashioned cologne smell.

Honestly, I don't know. I don't have a clear idea what Old Spice smells like. And since SWMBO has declared I am 100% forbidden to smell like her father, I haven't gotten on board the OS nostalgia train. Smile

Sorry, it was the only old fashioned cologne I could think of. Father wore it, I wore it, wife loves it, and now they don't make it! Just fishing for what else Black Tie might smell like. Thanks!
