I received this razor in the mail yesterday after a sort of spur of the moment buy on another sites B/S/T and I don't think I could have made a better decision!

The razor in question:

From what I understand these were made between the 1930's and 1950's in Germany. They were so successful at the time that Gillette bought them out.

Well let me say, their success was for good reason! This is the smoothest, most comfortable razor I have used to date. Comfortable in hand, maybe around 60g, and a small blade exposure that fits nicely in line the the curve of the head and guard bar. In fact, the head appears to bend the blade more than other razors I own. I tried to take a pic to show, but cell phones don't always take the best pictures.

Whatever magician designed the head of this razor, well he was a genius! I've always admired this razor from afar, the black knob on the spiral handle is one of the best looking designs I have seen in a razor, vintage or modern. Couple that with the comfortable grip and mild, smooth, and effective shave, and trust me I am a lover of mild razors, makes this razor instantly into my top 3 spot and with duke it out with the Fatboy/Toggle for first place slot.

For those who also love the mild razor, I highly suggest the Rotbart Mond-Extra No° 15, or similar solid guard bar razor made by Rotbart (there are a few from my research). I foresee this razor not leaving my rotation for the next couple weeks or so. I'll probably even be bringing it back home with me over winter break to really get to know it.

It's a good looking razor, unknown to me. What the average price on these?

I paid $35, which I found to be very fair for the original box and in such superb condition. I don't see them for sale very often though. I've seen a few on ebay too, though I don't remember their going price.

Phil was selling these for a while as NOS. I thought it was a great shaver but like other bad decisions sold mine. Greg at iKon made a prototype and I thought for a while he would produce them but I guess he changed his mind. Congratulations and happy shaving.

I did not know either of these facts, very interesting! I read that there were a bunch available for cheap on ebay a while back, I wonder if that's how Phil acquired them.

$35 is a fantastic price for a Rotbart. My 3 I've had I paid $40, $75, and $55 for. They're fantastic shavers

Because I have a buffing machine and didn,t like the Grey color mine came with.

I'll have to try some different blades I suppose. I liked mine at first but recently haven't been getting good shaves from it for some reason.

I used my usual, the Polsilver SI with it today.

I have one of those. There were a huge stock of them, probably found on some kind of warehouse in Germany, last year. They invaded the German ebay, and some European forums as well - I remember a gigantic group-buy of more than ~120 units that happened on one of the Spanish shaving forums.

Mine cost ~€15, NOS, with the kind help of a German friend:

A very effective and mild razor, highly recommended, and I consider myself lucky to have this one. Smile

Nice find! I have a solid bar rotbart that is one of the most aggressive shavers i've ever used. I don't know if it was designed that way, but the bar's are at a slight slant. One of my favorite razors!
