I posted and my post was in lots of rectangular "text".

I returned to the "Forum" and it too was mostly rectangles. I figured it was my computer so I rebooted and the same thing displayed.

Gave it some time and refreshed and it's back to using readable text and not the Bizarro version. Very odd.

it was something to do with the gzip settings on the forum. gzip = compression.

once I disabled it, the problem went away. I'm just trying to figure out why it worked without any issues for months and then started acting up today.

anyhow, I've got a support thread opened up on the forum software community forums to see if they can help me out.

Wow, you too, Brian. I had just finished sending a PM and didn't know what the heck happened. While I didn't reboot my computer, eventually the site did refresh. Definitely weird.

I have to thank my Spanish friend, Teiste, for immediately sending me a message when the forum went down. Cool

I thought the forum got hacked by disaffected.... yeah that doesn't make sense.

It was odd though. Looked like scrambled code on my screen. Knew it was something server side because the source code was the same.

It's the cartrige shaving terrible virus Biggrin

From MyBB documentation:
"Gzip is a compression tool used on servers to compress webpages before they are sent to the user in an attempt to save bandwidth. Unfortunately Gzip isn't available on all servers and because it is turned on by default in MyBB 1.2 and above, it can cause functionality problems."

For what I understand, it's not the forum software, but the hosting server that maybe does not support gzip compression.

And here's how to enable it on the server:

http://zeitblog.com/2011/07/enable-gzip-...w-hosting/

the host we use allows gzip, but they must of started gzipping sites on the server side yesterday rather than allowing their clients to do individually through the software they use. essentially, we were gzipping (compressing) the site 2 times, thus the funky text.

we'll be moving the site to a new server in the next day or two once I have it fully provisioned and I'll be doing server side gzipping.
