Hello, all. I'm new to the brush and bowl. Haven't even decided which straight razor I want to start with yet. I am working on my lather skills, though.

I've picked out the mug I want to use as my soap holder, I guess you'd call it, and It's a tad larger than my puck. I started with the Van der Hagen "deluxe" soap and have read some things about melting it into my mug. I'd also like to add a little Old Spice for extra scent.

Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Welcome to the nook, and welcome to your new hobby Smile

Best advice and tip I can give is to read various threads and don't be shy about asking questions. Oh, and don't be afraid to experiment either - I find that to be part of the fun of shaving.

Welcome to TSN, I see you are jumping into straights. I went there once, I absolutely love to sharp edges, what ever it is. My journey fell short mostly due to lack of time to maintain the razor, I guess it was really just the lack of will to devote the time and money to it.

Melt your VDH Down (:10 at a time)
Once it's melted, add your Old Spice to it (just a bit you don't need a lot)
Wait for it to harden and voila. Old Spice Soap.
