Interesting that you say 12. A while ago I arbitrarily decided to never have more than 14 brushes. I only keep brushes I like a lot and rotate through them evenly. I figured if I couldn't use a brush once every 2 weeks I wasn't enjoying its use. It's also a way to keep SBAD under control. I've hit 14 before but now I'm at 11. If I'm at 14 and want another brush, one of the ones I already have has to go.

Omega 39
Semogue 1800
Semogue Italian Barber LE
Semogue TSN LE Badger/Boar
Simpsons Duke 3 in Best
Truefitt & Hill 1/2 Silvertip
Rudy Vey custom "Stubby XL" 24/50 TGN Finest Fan XH

The last 2 brushes are my favorite badgers..both are fans, and they have those "hooked" tips like many Thaters have that are uber soft, I don't know if it's from treating the tips or what but I like it. That's about it, believe it or not, I'd include my Shavemac TSN LE D01 if I was just going by knot, but the handle on that thing really kills my enjoyment of it. I have others but these are all I'd really miss.

Geez this is funny. In the old days a fella got buy with one brush and one straight....

I currently have 6. 1 of which is a very cheap tiny brush that came in a brush, soap and bowl kit I picked up for $2. I only use it to test lather my concoction soaps. I also have 2 Burma Shaves. So in reality I have 4 brushes. I can only see me with 3 maybe 4 more. A Semoge, Vie Long horse. Either a Muhle or an Omega synthetic, and last but not least a silvertip of some kind. Then I would probably retire the old VdH. It's my least favorite of all. That would leave me with 7 by the time I'm done.

IN HOUSE:
VdH boar
Parker Best Badger
Omega 100066 boar
Burma Shave (circa 1989)
Burma Shave new
Made in China special.

WANT/NEED
Semoge boar
Vie Long horse
Omega or Muhle synthetic
A silvertip Probably WSP

Insert Rooney Old Type P1 & Shavemac D01 3 Band Fan here as well to round on my dozen.

A variety of handles, hair, makes, lofts etc to give me a good choice on any given day, depending on how I feel.

The Rooney is on it's way and the D01 is being finalized.

That is my Dozen brushes in use, with a few more under the sink (restores etc)

I actually have trouble imagining trying to make use of that many brushes. Right now I have four that I use regularly, one that I use rarely, and one that I loaned to a friend.

They're all pretty different, which is what makes it fun. I'm not sure I can think of twelve brush "profiles" that I'd want to have.

(Which is not to say there aren't really handsome looking brushes that I'd like to look at that would be functionally redundant.)

Current
1. Semogue SOC 2-Band
2. Semogue 1305
3. TGN super silvertip knot in a vintage handle
4. Vulfix 660S
5. Omega Pro 49
6. Vie-Long 13800

Potentially Desired
  • Shavemac Finest
  • Something interesting from Rod Neep
  • Vie-Long 13061

all 12 of mine get used regularly, but can see how it can get out of control. with people posting "rave reviews" and "best ever" statements, it's hard to resist pressing "add to cart".

the ones i have offer me enough variet with makes, handles, feel on face etc to be able to now safely read a reviw and move on.

some get used more then others, but i usually go in spurts. right now, it's all SR, Thater and Shavemac...but next month, it may be the Chubby and then the Boar.

not sure why anyone could actaully use 50+ brushes or 100+, as there is no way they are getting used more then 2-3 times a year, if that. i can respect the collector/hobby aspect of it though, as most of us have some AD we need to feed. Whether it's Writing instruments, watches, fragrances, pens, movies/music, vinyl records or shave gear (a couple of these are my AD's), it's all in good fun and harmless as long it does not interfer with family and personal life and finances. i can afford to buy more, but choose not to and am trying to limit my collection to only brushes i regularly use.

the odd brush i have in my drawer or under the sink, are a couple restores etc that are not worth selling or trading and are more kept for sentimental reasons, as they are ones i am proud of restoring and will likely get pulled out down the road or the kids can use them for their "fun shaves"

i don't have twelve, per se, as i have quadruples of the synthetic, so here goes:
* Rooney Heritage Stubby 1XL 3-band
* Rooney Heritage Stubby 1 3-band
* Rooney Heritage Stubby 1XL 2-band
* Simpsons Chubby 1 2-band
* Frank Shaving synthetic 24/48mm
* WSP 2-band (would like it in a chubby style with shorter loft and thicker knot)

* i would love to try the Simpsons Somerset and the Rooney Finest, but will never pay the money for them. These brushes are more than enough for me and i will most likely pass a few on to my son to further add to his nice collection, already. Hee hee.
i may add more later....
