So I picked up a Thuja wood Joris off our BST and really really love it. With a little use, I think this could eventually become my daily shaver. I am also thinking about picking up a second Joris (yeah WTH right?) and it's the Palladium / Rosewood combo handle at Royal Shave.

While there I noticed that they have three Plisson brushes available. One happens to be the Thuja wood version (with Palladium at the crown and base, and a Palladium / Rosewood mix which also matches the Joris handle perfectly. Being the same company I would expect no less.

The problem for me is .... Each of these brushes is $450. A47

I just cannot come up with any reason a brush should cost that much other than "because it can". Are Plissons "all that and more"? Is European White Badger super rare? What are its characteristics?

The question of whether a Plisson is worth its cost will always depend entirely upon who is answering it. Opinions always will vary widely, as long as brushes are made, just as they do for old Manchurians and Rooney Finests. I have had several Plissons, and in my experience the EW and HMW hairs have the softest tips of any brush I've ever used, very luxurious and pampering. However, the brushes also felt kind of floppy to me and splayed a lot while applying lather, which is why I eventually sold them. I just like more backbone than they provided.

Hi Doug,
[Image: HR_411-094-00_plisson_joris_thujawood_sz10_3.jpg]
The pictures (Royal Shave) shows a 2 band.
Knot 23 Loft 56 / 2 band in European White Badger, looks good !

If it's a 3 band I think it's too FLOPPY !
I would definitely ask Royal Shave the shaving brush they send you is a 2 band.

Is it worth the money ?
They are certainly beautiful, but there are so many wonderful shaving brushes for that money.

I own a Plisson Antic Brass Napoleon Handle - European White Badger 2 band Knot: 22 mm / Loft: 56 mm.
And I love it !

It's a great workhorse for cream & hard soap.
Beautiful very soft extreme white hair tips & more than enough backbone.

Tips are so white, I own a HMW which is not as white as my Antic Brass Napoleon European White Badger ?!

Regards,
Eelco

EElco,

That's the Thuja wood one which would match my current Joris. That said, I am thinking about upgrading to the Palladium / Rosewood handle if the Joris were to become a daily shaver for me:

Which has this matching brush:

Well , Doug , what John and Eelco have told you.But I wouldnt spend that money on a Plisson , unless is a vintage one , HMW or European White , which I found to be nothing short than SUPERB.Current ones arent that good (IMHO) and not worth the price for me.
Ill rather get a WSP Super Silvertip (HMW) or any Simpson (but Manchurian) , Rooney etc

I am very satisfied with my Plisson 2 band shaving brushes.
And I think they're worth the money, you pay a lot for the "mystique" extra thing .....
On the other hand, I also had Plisson's that really were too floppy (long loft 3 band).

I like your Brush (2 band) / Razor combo = very very nice ! Tongue

Eelco

Eelco , since you are truly a Plisson "connosieur" , have you tried Vie Long two band badger? If you had , how would you compare it with the Plisson 2 band , both HMW or European Grey?

Yes , the mystique...and sometimes we gladly pay for it , my friend. And Plisson has it !

I agree with Eelco. The 3 band can be lacking in backbone, but the 2 band EW is not. in fact I'm thinking of adding the Antic Brass in EW 2 band (Eelco's yesterday's SOTD brush) to my collection...

Hi Teiste!

I am curious as to your negative thoughts on a Simpson Manchurian. Thanks!

I just got through looking at the Plisson website and having trouble finding where is says anything about 2-band hair. All I see is HMW and some mention of European White.

Try here. While they don't specifically call them 2 band and 3 band, you can certainly tell which is which in the EW brushes.

Michael , I dont know what you mean by "negative comments"? I simply find Simpson best or super badger better for me , and Simpson best badger is (for me) one of the best value badger hair for the money out there. Thats all

Ben..... a very very nice collection !!!

Vie-Long Badger is very nice !
The difference between Vie-Long Silvertip & Plisson European White is that the hairs are thicker by the Plisson.
The Vie-Long is extra stuffed (more hair in the knot) !

Both (in 2 band) have more than enough backbone ! Vie-Long has almost velvety hairtips.

I think Plisson is a little overvalued, price difference between EW & HMW are disproportionately.
Left a Plisson HMW and right Plisson EW ???? Too much vin ?

And Vie-Long is undervalued.

By the way, I am a big Simpsons Manchurian Badger fan !!!
Nice thick hair ! And most are 2 band .... Very cleverly devised by Simpsons (Mark).
These are the real workhorses !
I think Simpsons is very reasonably priced, if you look at the quality (Best is sometimes like Silvertip).
I own a Simpsons for more than 20 years.... split the purchase price by the number of years.

Regards,
Eelco
