To glue or not to glue that is the question. I'm debating putting it in the old horn handle but I should have ordered a smaller knot. I guess they run a little over sized.

Steve,

I think that looks beautiful. Test it out at some different lofts, find what you like, then glue.

Get the right size knot for the horn brush!

Hi Steve

That's a (very!) nice looking Shavemac knot and looks pure class in your hand turned handle.

What size is the knot (overall height and knot diameter)?

What is the loft height shown in the photo?

If need be, is it feasible to widen the knot hole in the handle (and deepen)?

Take care, Mike

Mike, it's a 23mm Finest. Loft in the pic is about 48mm. No problem with widening the hole and I could go deeper but not a lot. I could drill the handle and sand the base of the knot and probably get another 4 or 5mm. But I figured with a finest I wouldn't need to, with a Silver Tip I'll keep that option open. When I made the handle I was thinking 46/50mm for loft. Total loft of the knot is 60mm. It's the first time I ordered a knot from them (Shavemac) and you specify your loft. I went with 50mm, next time I'll fudge a bit and order it longer. I'm going to do a 28 or 30mm in the future (Silver Tip) and I'll be done with personal (for me) brushes for a while. The only problem is that I'll have to quit buying straight razors long enough to buy a knot. Easier said than done.

I have the 23mm finest set at 48mm, I love it. I do not see anything wrong with going to 45mm loft, however for me the sweet spot for this knot is at 48. If I wanted a shorter loft I would go to a 21mm knot. That is a work of art you have there.

I wouldn't sink it any further, those knots flow very well at 50'ish mm.

Yeah, for the finest I'd want 50mm for the 23mm knot. It's a great combo.

Hi Steve

Thank you for the detailed information, I really do enjoy absorbing and learning (from) this kind of information...

For what it's worth I think the 48mm loft height shown in your photo looks right, the overall proportions of the shaving brush look spot on to me.

Personally I wouldn't go lower with the loft height, but that's just my opinion.

Maybe you could increase the loft height by a millimeter or two, but I definitely wouldn't go above 50mm -- reason being, I wouldn't want less than 10mm of the knot embedded into the knot hole. Don't ask me why, but my gut tells me 12mm minimum knot embedment serves best, though if push comes to shove 10mm will just about work (in my mind).

Good luck and I look forward to seeing the final (glued in) result.

Take care, Mike
