I am toying with the idea of replating my Fatboy named George...

While in a local jewelry store picking a last minute gift for my wife, I overheard one of the owners suggest black rhodium plating on a wedding band a patron was considering.

When I finished my transaction, I asked if they do the plating.. She said absolutely! Black rhodium? She said it was her favorite.

I didn't ask details at that point because I am not sure if I like George with a little patina or if the replating would be better. I doubt the shop would repaint the numbers, ring or spring.

So... What says my peers? Rhodium? Black Rhodium? Leave it alone? It's in really good condition both visually and functionally.

If I did have it re-plated, I would have it done by someone who is experienced with re-plating razors and not just jewelry. If it was a three piece razor rather than a TTO, I may let the jewelry store give it a go. That said, there could still be problems (such as the blade not fitting over the posts).

I think your thinking of black nickel, Reliable electroplating can do this finish. I've seen razors done in this finish and they look good.

I appreciate both original condition and replated razors, though I would be more likely to leave alone if its in fairly good condition to begin with. I'm sure that the black rhodium would look great.

I stumbled across that picture last night.. There are a few others by the the same reseller that are really nice looking.

After pondering it a bit, I think I am going to leave it alone. I do like that black replate, but my gutt tells me it isn't for George.

If it is not too bad then leave it be..They are legendary shavers and having that aged look makes them more vintage, look at Clint EastwoodBiggrin

Unless there's a cosmetic issue with the original nickle, I'd leave it alone. Good luck!

Do you have the contact info for the black rhodium plating or the black nickel plater? This might be the answer to my trying to find a gunmetal FaTip. I could just have a regular grande or piccolo replated in black something.

Nope, looking for a replater who can do black rhodium. I am thinking that maybe instead of my original plans I get 4 different brass handles from UFO and get a nickel, chrome, gold and black rhodium plating on the and just get a second FaTip Piccolo and get the head replated in black rhodium. 4 nice FaTips with perfectly matching real handles.
