Those reaching our site via an iOS, Android or Blackberry devices may be getting "tapatalk is available for this forum" dialog boxes.

For those who have used Tapatalk, you know what this means. For the rest of you, Tapatalk is a plugin which installs on a forum website and for which there is a standalone app available in your respective marketplaces / apps stores. The phone version runs $2.99.

So the question you may be asking is "why" would I want this. Well for those with 10" tablets and a decent processor, the mobile and desktop websites are a better bet. However for a smartphone ..... well there are a number of advantages. Tapatalk on the server side reformats the data heading to your device. It formats the forums tailored to the app. You won't find formatting issues as you can get with the mobile website. Tapatalk also is much faster and uses less data for those who do not have unlimited data plans. Tapatalk only allows access to the forums and messages. The portal and control panels are not accessible. This is because Tapatalk is designed for fast reading and responding in forums, it is not meant to replace the website. It's at least worth testing on your smartphone for those who cannot get enough of The Nook.

Stay tuned.

Edited to reflect the fact the ad supported free version is no longer available.

there's a $3 version that says it supports both iPad and iPhone, but then there's a $5 version that supports just the iPad. Wonder which one to get?

The 3$ version probably just blows up the phone version on the tablet and the 5$ one moat likely has tablet specific formatting.

I had the iPad version. It's definitely the better choice on a tablet. The cheaper version will work on both but look like crap on your iPad. Buy both!

Doug, I want to thank you for suggesting this for our members. While I rarely use my phone for TSN, when I do I just use the regular version in Luxure because I dislike the mobile version and the blue version. As I say, for short infrequent looks, that does me just fine. Mostly, I'm on my Mac Desktop, Mac iPad or Windows 7 laptop so I don't have a problem.

The reason for the thank you is explaining what Tapatalk is. While I had a vague idea, I never understood completely. Your explanation lets me know that I don't need it right now but if I ever do I'll know what it does, and doesn't, do. It's this kind of help across TSN that is the true highlight of the site, in my opinion. Again, thanks. Thumbsup

The following is screenshot heavy, but it will show you what you can do with Tapatalk. Please note, I am showing this in the default / light skin. There are numerous color skins, as well as a light and dark version of each.

Main account menu, this is all the forums I browse with Tapatalk on my phone:

So there you have it, a brief tutorial of what our forums look like with tapatalk on a smartphone (this was on my phone, not a tablet). For those so inclined, test it out and give it a whirl. It does not replace our website, but it does make browsing our forums from a smartphone (Apple, Android or Blackberry) a lot easier.

I'm really impressed, Doug. I still don't plan on using my smartphone very often for TSN but I can certainly see the advantages to Tapatalk.

I've got a BlackBerry and I'm not much of an "app" man, but when I do get one I'm generally disappointed and wonder if the phone's performance is somewhat downgraded by apps.

For instance, I got so frustrated with "The Weather Channel" app that I put a link on my desktop to the front page for my city and it works so much better.

I got a Signal Boost app and it seldom can improve my reception.

I got a battery efficiency app and the only way it can help is to shut me off from the outside world.
