Hello fellow traditional wet shavers Smile

I mostly face lather, and only very seldom use a bowl or my scuttle for other than the purpose of a brush scuttle to moisten my brush before the shave and for keeping it warm between passes.

I have rock hard water here in Copenhagen, Denmark - and I actually find that It's easier to create lather directly on my face than it is to swirl my brush for 60-90 seconds in a bowl or a scuttle and then paint the lather on.

I also much prefer the feel I get from face lathering over bowl & scuttle lathering, the sensation you get from face lathering is just miles better IMHO

I tend to get a little bit more yoghurt like lather when I face lather, than what I get from lathering in a bowl - but if you go for the exact same result, you can also easily obtain the same light wave fluffy lather created directly on your face as you can from creating it in the bowl. This just takes a bit longer.......

But I do tend to get a slightly thicker and more protective lather and coating from face lathering than I get from bowl lathering.

I think this may be due to the fact that the shaving cream/soap gets directly blended with your skin and oils in your skin when you facelather - thus will probably create a different kind of lather and also if you don't add the exact same amount of water and mix it the exact same way as in the bowl, the lather created on your face will tend to me a bit more creamy and yoghurt like in structure.
I REALLY like this Biggrin

When and if you go through a period of sensitive skin, you can get a bit of irritation from face lathering, but once you get more experienced and get a collection of different brushes and creams/croaps/soaps you can pretty easily find a combination of brush and shaving cream, that you will be able to use during these periods, when you have sensitive skin and don't like the idea of creating the lather directly on your face.

For instance I will try to avoid using my more rough brushes (my 3 Shavemac D01 2-Band and my 3 Vie Long 2-Band come to mind here) during these periods and maybe use a thicker more lubricating shaving cream aimed specifically for sensitive skin and also use a cream that will lather more easily and protect your skin.

So with the right products and your technique dialed in, there really is no excuse NOT to face lather all of the time W00t

In my view face lathering is one of the most important things in traditional wet shaving that just makes me stay in the game and keeps getting me enjoyable shaves, week in & week out Number_one

I find that I prefer to massage a little bit of the cream directly on my face with my fingers and add 5-6-7-8 drops of water and rub it in for like 10-20 seconds. Then add some product to the brush, either by dipping the brush in the pot or adding the product directly to the brush bristles and then massage it in to my stubbles.

I start out by soaking the brush in warm water for 2-3 minutes, then gently shake the brush dry, then start face lathering as said by either dipping the brush in the pot of cream or adding the product directly to the brush bristles.

If you have trouble getting more than 1 pass from this, either use more product to start out with or add a bit of extra product for the second pass.

Any face lather fans in here Cheers

UPDATE - UPDATE: I really like that so many wet shavers prefer to face lather, and that this thread got so many views so fast and that many members in just less than 24 hours. I hope the bowl and scuttle shavers will also soon create their own club, because I know there are also many fans of that technique out there Smile

I wish everyone good luck, no matter how they prefer to lather their cream/croap/soap Thumbup

Claus, i love it and have been doing it ever since i started wet-shaving 14 months ago. i tried bowl and scuttle lathering, but much prefer face-lathering! However, i don't soak my brush and use only cold water for my face and a quick 5 second brush rinse before i begin loading the soap. Works wonders!

Another face lathered here. During the winter month's I'll keep my brush warm in a scuttle, but that's about it.

Exclusive face latherer here. I also have hard water and find that I get much better lather this way and it is my main prep before the shave. I like all the beautiful scuttles & bowls people use but I just can't justify any of them with how much I enjoy building the lather on my face with superb brushes.

So yeah, please count me in. I can handle the initiation, whatever it may be! Cool

I have bowl lathered exactly twice. My very first shave, and then a month or so later just to double check my decision to face lather. That second time it was like I was in withdrawal all day. I haven't had even the slightest desire to bowl lather since.

It just makes sense to me. I get immediate feedback on my lather, it preps the face and beard, and just feels so darn good! Especially after the hot towel on the face on these cold winter mornings.

I might be choosy about brushes if I ever had a sunburn, but other than that I just use whichever brushes turn it is for that day.
