I use Musgo Real Glyce Lime Oil soap (MRGLO)..it has a high concentration of glycerin and lime oil to soften the hair. I vigorously scrub my face with it and then apply lather over the the top of the MRGLO without rinsing, seems to help my shaves quite a bit.

I've tried the Truefitt & Hill Ultimate Comfort pre-shave oil and thought it was very nice, smells like fresh oranges and actually improved my shaves a bit, but it always left greasy, slimey rings around my sink plastered with stubble, so I never bought more when my sample ran out...it's also fairly expensive. I hear great things about Shave Secret pre-shave oil, several gents here swear by it, perhaps they will chime in soon.

I really like Jack Black Beard Lube as a pre-shave. I used to use it alone when I used cartridges and decided to try it as a pre-shave and it works great for that.

I made some pretty nice pre-shave oil using the recipes in this thread.

I've had the best results using PREP.

I've used all of the Italian pre shaves and I liked 3P the best followed by Proraso White then Green. Vitos is good and I bought the 250ml tub for around $14 which is a great value if you compare it to the other's 100ml tub's. I actually liked PREP the least but YMMV.

Honestly if you think Nivea is crap, you should probably give up on shaving....

you will never believe this, but it works great for me.
pre-shave-plain ol' baby oil
post shave-Jergen's Lotion-original scent.
before you head out the door, apply your favorite after shave/cologne.
i have used corn huskers lotion that works well as does udder cream. i also use Nivea's for sensitive skin .
