Hey now -

Dan writing here from NYC (at least during that part of the day I'm in my office, ignoring my occupational requirements).

Just started on the straight razor scene and have discovered that
1. I am way too fond of Pinaud Clubman and have discovered, through purchases, that Brut, then Canoe, then Truefitt and Hill's own Clubman scent are, in descending order, the best cologne equivalents for Clubman AS.
2. The Dan neck probably prefers a razor with a nice smile and a round point.
3. The lovely and talented Mrs. Dan does not compare budgets on handbags against shaving goods, so much as number of purchases, which could prove problematic...

I can get a decent shave on the sideburns, but as a husky lad am having a little bit of a problem on the neck - East/West passes are difficult to achieve and I'm curious to hear any pointers from similarly proportioned lads.

And if you're sitting on some extra shave ready razors, let's talk.

Dan, welcome to the nook.

I'm a fairly slim person and trust me, the neck should be a lot easier for you than myself. The jawline is a pretty rough area for me since there is not much meat around that area.

East -to west on the neck? Never... at least for me. I usually do a two pass shave, with the grain and against the grain. Sometimes I'll do an across the grain pass in between the two, when I do that I do a slight diagonal pass on the neck. Since you're just starting with straights I suggest you just make one pass with the grain, focusing on angle and no pressure. With time and practice your shaves will be getting a lot better.

Good luck and enjoy.

Howdy and Welcome to TSN.

1. I like Pinaud Clubman and have acquired many other fine AS.

2. I am Lucky in that my wife does not notice. She sees the Shaving Stash growing but, has not said a word.

3) I assume that the neck - East/West Passes would be solved by Mapping your face, streching the skin and changing the direction of the pass. You may have to ask that question in the Straight Razor Section.

4) I wish I had some extra shave ready razors so I wouldn't have to get out the hone
