I just bought the Merkur 47c since I was looking for a cheap way to get a 3-Piece head for my Mühle, Edwin J and Weber/Ikon Frankenstein razors Biggrin

But does anyone actually own the 47c and enjoy it ?

It's as far as I know the first 3-piece razor from Merkur (I could be wrong here Blush )

The handle has excellent balance and pretty hefty weight and a non slippery knotted finish on the handle. The foot does look at bit clumsy, like an elephant foot, but the balance of the razor feels awesome when I hold it.

The Merkur 33C and 42C are also 3-piece razors, and others as well, Claus. Wink

The 1904 is also 3 piece. Available as SB (42C) or OC (41C). Inexpensive. Somewhat mild. Small handle. Modelled after a classic 1904 Gillette...

I bought one, used it 3 or 4 times and it went on ebay due to lack of interest in the sale section of the Nook. I just didn't care for the feel of the shave with the longer handle. It didn't come close to my 34C...

I prefer shorter handles, so no I don't own it. I own both 1904 razors though. They are mild, but keepers! I'm sure the heads (the SB) are comparable and the major difference will be found in the handle alone...

I often wonder why some prefer smaller handles, while others prefer the longer ones ?

Is it only because of hand size or what ?

I use XL gloves and prefer longer & larger handles.
But my Ikon Bulldog XL is only 85 mm long, and I like it okay because it's heavy and thick and provide a great grip because of the small grooves and pits in the handle. But in general I prefer 95mm+ handles......

I don't believe I have exceptionally small or large hands. So it's not necessarily anything to do with comfort or grip. In my case, it feels like a smaller handle provides me with more feedback and more control over my shave. I also find the smaller to be more agile and manoeuvrable. One idea behind the long handle is that it impacts slightly on aggression...

I'm a pretty big dude with large hands...when I first started out I thought bc I had big hands I would like longer handles...my first real DE (I say "real" bc my first was a Parker 22R that was a POS) was a Merkur 23c (long handle). I liked it until I got my hands on an EJDE89 and the the balance and thicker, heaftier handle felt so much better. Over the years I've learned that I actually prefer regular to smaller handles. Some of my favorite razors are SEs that have pretty short handles.

That depends on the mood, for me... sometimes I prefer a shorter handle, like the Merkur R41 or a Gillette Tech... sometimes I prefer the big, heavy feel of a Merkur 43C (a real hammer)...

Variety is the spice of life...! Cool

Jusr received my Merkur 47c, and to my surprise the handle is very well made.

Very nice weight to it, chrome finish is flawless but not as beautiful as the Edwin Jaggers, but the overall weight and balance of the handle makes it feel like a very sturdy solid razor.

The elephant foot, which looks very clumsy in the production photos of it, looks pretty good and well designed when you actually hold the handle in your hands.

All in all, this is not a UFO or Ikon Bulldog XL handle, but I will almost compare it quality wise and feel wise to my Edwin Jagger Chatsworth Barley Chrome handle........so pretty solid handle for that cheap s price IMHO.

Recommended Smile
