Boellis Panama 1924 Shaving Soap

This is a product that I have wanted to try for a long time but could never cut loose of the $50.00 it cost to buy the large bar. Well, thanks to a generous PIF from our good member greyhawk (Stuart), I have had a chance to try it.

Here is a little information that I copied and pasted from Joseph over on Italian Barber.

Boellis Panama 1924 Shaving Soap 175g

Boellis Panama 1924 Shave Soap has a wonderful almond scent and is crafted with pure almond oil.  This scent is a favorite among original, classic Neapolitan barbers. This luxurious shaving soap is made of all natural materials and is perfect for all skin types. Each soap bar is approximately 175g and can be used as a whole or cut into sections to be lathered in any mug or bowl. This premium shaving soap comes wrapped in the signature Boellis blue and silver packaging with a blue box. It is a beautiful item and would make an awesome gift.

While chatting with Michele Boellis in Naples in the summer of 2011, he explained how he was instrumental in the creation of this new formula of shaving soap and he would settle for nothing less than perfection from the artisan made Panama 1924 line.  Michele Boellis has definitely put his passion into this product and the end result screams perfection in every way.
Made in Italy

Ingredients: Aqua, stearic acid, palmitic acid, tallow, cocos nucifera, potassium hydroxide, potassium carbonate, tetrasodium edta, parfum.

My Review

First let me say this product is becoming harder and harder to find in the USA. I was told that it is no longer being distributed in the USA but I have not verified that with the manufacture.

I decided to use the piece that Stuart sent me like I would a shave stick. After my morning face wash in warm water I rubbed the Boellis on my face then used my Semogue TSN 2012 LE to start building lather. And oh what a lather it was.

The lather was thick and creamy, and after lathering twice for my two pass shave, my skin was left feeling soft and refreshed. This soap has that Italian almond scent, but nothing at all like Cella or P160.

If I were going to keep large bars of Italian soaps, this would be one of them. Don't know if I would spend $50.00 for the approximately 175g bar, but I would spend $25.00 to split one.

I have also been told that the bar does not weigh 175g, but rather that is the weight of the soap and the box it comes in.

Excellent review Johnny! I was wandering about this one as well but was worried about Almond scent. Can you compare what it smells like if not like Cella or P160?

Thank you for the review! I was also wondering about the scent to Cella. Does it perform better than Cella?

To me, the Cella has that almond/cherry scent which I do not particularly like. It is closer to scent aligned with P160 but not quit as strong. In other words, it is a light almond scent. Not overbearing.

As for as performance, I would say it is better than the Cella, at least for me.

I agree, Johnny. It's scent is not strong at all, quite a light almond scent by my nose. Also, it's lather and skin care properties are top notch. Value at $50? I say worth it, as it's a hard soap. I've used a slice in a bowl for more than a dozen shaves and can barely tell it's used. If you can find Panama 1924, get it!

Great review, Johnny!
Wow, I will have to pull this stuff out of the "on-deck circle" and work it into the rotation. I don't think I have any more room under the sink and in my drawer, though! Biggrin

I REALLY like this stuff. I used it for a while and drifted away. Then I found Martin de Candre, which became my everyday soap. Now that I've read Johnny's review, I'm reminded that it's time to pull the Panama 1924 out of the drawer and get it into use again!

The weight of the bar should be ~175 g. When I purchased mine, the box was labeled 250 g which was the weight of the entire package including the box.

Just an update on where to purchase this product line.

There are several online shops in Europe that sell this product. One in Budapest, two in Germany, two in Italy, and one in the UK. I purchased mine from the one in the UK, Brummells of London

Royal Shave and Pampered (one in the same) have discontinued the product due to lack of distribution, and Joseph at Italian Barber does not know when he will be getting anymore in stock.

I think it is a great product line so it is worth me waiting for a UK delivery.
