So, the other day I was making a big pot of chili. It was late morning on a beautiful, sunny spring day. Wife called and said she was on her way home from her teeth cleaning. And everything was right in the world.
Suddenly the whole house shook with a loud BOOM! As I jumped, my first thought was a low sonic boom; then a tree coming down on us. Nope, that wasn't it. I ran to the front of the house and found my beautiful wife in her car against the wall of the house. She had pushed the accelerator instead of the break. The door to the garage had still been closed (not anymore). It's gone, and so is a wall to our home.
What's the big thing about hitting the gas when it should be the break?
My car in the garage:

Hers, after I pulled it out of the wreck:

This is the inside wall to the house. It's a stairwell leading to the basement:

FWIW, All is well. Our insurance isn't the cheapest around, but I couldn't have aked for faster, friendlier service.

Yeah everybody, she is fine. She slept all the next day but I don't blame her. What I need to do now is get her back in the saddle again. She's pretty much afraid to get behind the wheel of a car (must admit, I'm a bit nervous myself

Everything apart from your wife is material - glad she is ok.
I had a car accident when I was a teenager and found it very difficult to build up the courage to get behind the wheel again. I went weeks without attempting. Dad managed to sort the problem. One day he came into my room panicking that he needed to pick something up from town but we had a delivery due at home he needed to sign for. I just jumped up and said "No probs, I will head into town". He threw me his keys and before I knew it I was a mile up the road in his car. He had caught me off guard - I didn't have time to think about getting in the driver's seat again.

Thanks Gary. We'll see tomorrow. I'm having her drive to her 'Doctors yearly check up'. I'll be in the passenger seat.

The insurance company and contractors have all been telling her that this happens all the time. They're good people.
I still don't get the confusion between the brake and the accelerator. I guess it happens.

Glad the wife was not hurt in the accident. The anxiousness about driving should go away after she is behind the wheel a few times. The material items can be repaired or replaced as our family can attest.
William, if you don't mind elaborating, I'd be interested...

I was sitting in a stopped car when we get rear-ended pretty badly. I wasn't hurt, but for about a year after, every time I saw a car coming up behind me I would tense up pretty badly. But I'm back to normal now!
