This past Tuesday I had 2 disc removed from my neck. It was a needful thing and I felt immediate relief after the surgery. But it really hurt! Still does.

I have to wear a collar for the next 5 weeks and that makes shaving nye impossible. What's a guy to do?

I feel your pain- I've had two lower back surgeries. My suggestion- let your body heal and don't worry too much about shaving- get a pair of clippers or a beard trimmer to help keep things manageable and if you have someone around to help you, let them help you. Plus, you probably don't want to shave all the way down anyway with that neck collar- it will give you irritation and ingrown hairs if the skin is unable to breath properly. Good luck and I wish you a speedy recovery.

Also, one more word of advice: It's going to hurt for a little bit- no matter how minor a back or neck surgery is, it is still major trauma on the body to have your spine operated on. Use your meds, that is what they are there for...you will reach a point where you will need them less an less, but while you are in pain use them, your body will actually begin to heal faster when it is not constantly fighting the pain.

Well, better out than in, I guess. But I deeply sympathize.

That does sound painful!

I have no idea as to a solution other than to have someone shave you.

It's really not worth it if it causes you more pain. I'm assuming you don't need to be clean shaven for the near future right?

Experiment with other body parts?

I have had major neck surgery (the whole neck is fused). It took a year before I no longer noticed it. Had 3 months in a collar, so I can fully empathize with you. I would suggest you do nothing about shaving until you can take the collar off long enough to do a one pass shave. That will hold you until you have your mobility back. Good luck and heal quickly.

Do what your docs & therapist say you can do. There is such as thing as doing more than you're ready for & that will only lead to setbacks. However, if you feel like you're ready for more then definitely like them know so they can assess whether you can or not.

Godspeed in your recovery.

Get well soon. It will be more fun to shave all that growth when you're able to do so!

Michael, wishing you a speedy and full recovery. Do what the doctor says and don't skimp on the pain killers if you need them.

It will be a while before things return to relatively normal, but stay optimistic, they said I would never be able to do sport activities again, now I'm in the gym every day again (with certain limits of course). Yoga has also helped me a lot.

Speedy recovery! and you can use the time to look around for shaving stuff ;-)

Thanks everyone.

I'm not to worried about shaving till the collar comes off. Gonna look scruffy but what the heck. As for pain meds, they are my friends right now.

Just to let y'all know, the surgeon says he was amazed that I was still functional after seeing what the bone spurs/discs were doing to the nerves in my neck. This is from a Dr that does 200+ of theses type surgeries a year.

All I know is that I feel better and look forward to a complete recovery. I'll keep y'all posted.
