This Is Scary !

They Walk Among Us and Many Work Retail

I was at the checkout of a K-Mart. The clerk rang up $46.64 charge. I Gave her a fifty dollar bill. She gave me back $46.64. I gave the money back to her and told her that she had made a mistake in MY favor.
She became indignant and informed me she was educated and knew what she was doing, and returned the money again. I gave her the money back -- same scenario! I gave up and departed the store with the $46.64.

I walked into a Starbucks with a buy-one-get-one-free coupon for a Grande Latte. I handed it to the girl and she looked over at a little chalkboard that said 'buy one-get one free.' 'They're already buy-one-get-one-free,' she said, 'so I guess they're both free.' She handed me my free Lattes and I walked out the door.

I ordered a Big Mac combo meal. The teenager behind the counter asked if I would like my change in some of "these funny quarters" that a "dude" had given her earlier in her shift. I looked at them and realized they were Sacagawea dollar coins. I tried to explain that to the teenager but to no avail. Keep in mind that she had never seen a 50 cent coin much less a dollar coin. So, I finally said he would be happy to take all of my change in "funny quarters" and left with my food and quite a profit.

One day I was walking down the beach with some Friends when one of them shouted, 'Look at that dead bird!' Someone looked up at the sky and said, 'Where?'

While looking at a house, my brother asked the real estate agent which direction was north because, he explained, he didn't want the sun waking him up every morning. She asked, 'Does the sun rise in the North?' When my brother explained that the sun rises in the East, and has for sometime, she shook her head and said, 'Oh I don't keep up with all that stuff.'

I used to work in technical support for a 24/7 call center. One day I got a call from an individual who asked what hours the call center was open. I told him, 'The number you dialed is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.' He responded, 'Is that Eastern or Pacific time?' Wanting to end the call quickly, I said, 'Uh, Pacific.'

My sister has a lifesaving tool in her car designed to cut through a seat belt if she gets trapped. She keeps it in the trunk.

They Walk Among Us!

My friends and I were on a beer run and noticed that the cases were discounted 10%. Since it was a big party, we bought 2 cases. The cashier multiplied 2 times 10% and gave us a 20% discount.

They Walk Among Us!

I couldn't find my luggage at the airport baggage area, so I went to the lost luggage office and told the woman there that my bags never showed up. She smiled and told me not to worry because she was a trained professional and I was in good hands. 'Now,' she asked me, has your plane arrived yet?'

They Walk Among Us!

While working at a pizza parlor I observed a man ordering a small pizza to go. He appeared to be alone and the cook asked him if he would like it cut into 4 pieces or 6. He thought about it for some time before responding. 'Just cut it into 4 pieces. I don't think I'm hungry enough to eat 6 pieces.'

Yep, They Walk Among Us!

That reminds me of a story.

When we were living in Texas some years ago we had an interesting interaction with a checkout girl. Bottles of wine were 20% off if you purchased 6 or more bottles. She insisted vehemently that we needed to buy at least 7 bottles to get the discount. She eventually called her supervisor who came and intervened to allow us the discount on the 6 bottles.

With the beer experience, they should have gone for 10 cases to receive 100% off.

Unfortunately it also reminds me of an experience when I was in medical practice. I skin tested a woman for allergies and didn't find any - her reactions to cosmetics were just irritant chemical reactions. So then she refused to pay her bill for the testing, saying, "But you didn't find any allergies - why should I pay?"

The opposite happens too! Worked with a guy who tells the story of taking his young son to a discount store to buy a bike. Buys the bike, they let him out the side gate. He then realized that the charge him the wrong price for it. A lot lower than the ticketed price.
To teach his son a lesson in honesty, he takes the bike back through the front doors. Sets off the alarms; is accused of stealing the bike! Took him a half hour to straighten it out, Because his Receipt is for a Different Bike!!!

I'm always amazed (or is it saddened) when I go somewhere and the checkout person says something like that'll be $4.82 and I give them $5.07 so I can get a quarter back. Far too frequently they hand me back the change and tell me I gave them too much. We have become too dependent on technology (yes I am in IT).

I am a Tax Accountant (CPA) and work in an Office reviewing Tax Returns.

We use a national computer software program that crunches the numbers and prints off the returns. (Of course everyone uses a program.)

However, there are sometimes errors that are caused by inputting the correct number in an incorrect spot.

Sometimes ... their will be a Diagnostic telling you of an error. Othertimes ... if you take the time to think ... you can "SEE THAT A RETURN IS WRONG."

When I told one of the Staff that they need to look at the return and make sure that it makes sense ("Common Sense") because they should look for any errors, their response was "Doesn't the Computer program catch the errors?" (Like all errors come with a Diagnostic.)
