Can somebody offer assistance in the origin of this brush? It is metal and stamped with the number 4 on it.

The mug does have nice artwork on it. I too cannot help with the brush, I would start scouring the net trying to find another that looks like it.

This brush most likely is a Rubberset #4 boar brush with an aluminum handle.

Rubberset Brush Company made a variety of brushes starting in the late 1800s in Newark, NJ. They produced shaving brushes until sales of canned shaving cream forced them out of the shaving brush business sometime in the 1960s. They continue to make paint brushes to this day.
