Gillette Old Type: What blade to use with it?
I am about to embark on a Gillette Old Type (1909) shaving exploration and will try a number of different blades; three shaves each blade, however, I was wondering with all the experience out there who in the Nook can recommend a blade for use with it, and why? What were your experiences?

I've used Astra SS (blue) and Astra SP (green) in my old and both have been great for me.

I use the Astra green with the R41 and it works well with that, too.

I like Voskhod blades in my Old Type mostly because I have about a thousand of them. Today I used a Shark SC, but have a bunch of Permasharp Super blades around as well. I don't really find the Old Type to be too blade specific.

Sounds like a good reason to use Voskhods then :0

RE: Gillette Old Type: What blade to use with it?
I find that the sharpest smoothest blades I can find work best in all of my DE razors. That means any 7 O:Clock blade from St.Petersburg (I have the yellows in stock), polsilvers of any label, Med Preps. There are others (I'd need to check my data) but those are the ones I have bought.

I'm not real particular about blades,I work with what I've got laying around.I usually use Astra SP's in my OLD and I'm pleased with their performance...

RE: Gillette Old Type: What blade to use with it?
I like Red Israeli Personna blades in an Old Type. I also tried Astra SPs and Feather as well and the reds worked for me the best. In fact, I was surprised how smooth and close the shave was in that combo, it made a big difference.

My Old Type is Canadian, I am not sure of the year/sub-model. All I know it has a ball-end and two cracks in the handle...

Hmm, interesting. I have never thought much of the reds, but I have a couple and will try one out.

RE: Gillette Old Type: What blade to use with it?
I heard that you might want to put in a "Blank" razor blade first followed by the second Razor Blade.

This gives you two Razor Blades in place but, only the second has a cutting edge (because you cut off the edge on the "Blank" razor blade).

This makes the blade thicker as the original Gillette Blades were thicker than they are with the newer "thin" razor blades.

Just a thought

Yep, it's called 'shimming'. I want to try single blades out first off, though, but thanks for the suggestion.

I think they are ok blades, very smooth, but Astra SP usually work better for me in other razors.

Super Iridiums for me as they are the smoothest modern blade that i have tried.
However, if you can get the vintage Wilkinson Swords, then i would go with those.
Good luck.

I would have to agree with Celestino on the SI. My 'old type' has the Bullmastiff handle, but without a doubt, a great combination.

My OT works well with most blades, but particularly with Voskhod, Ladas, Personna Super, and Astra SP.

RE: Gillette Old Type: What blade to use with it?
Today my first ever shave with a Gillette OT Single-ring (1909), coupled with a Polsilver Brown.

Wow, such a close and comfortable shave! I would say it was reasonably close to using the 2013 R41 Muhle, although lighter in the hands but somehow a little more chattery, especially ATG, but not much. The R41 has the edge, so to speak, but the margin is small. So, a 114 year- old razor that out-shaves most more recent DEs :) I'm impressed. Can't wait to try the Canadian New Type (1930) that I also have.

I think I could get an even better shave, though: today was my first attempt. I used TOBS which these days I am finding to be a little lacking in slick, although the avocado doesn't seem to have that particular issue. I used the sandalwood today. Tomorrow I might try Tabac and the day after MWF, just to get a different feel.

Hmm, my interest expands...

It would be 104 years.

The old type is probably my favorite shaver.

RE: Gillette Old Type: What blade to use with it?
Good deal,Shaun, they're great razors,my Olds are the only DE razors I use and more like my beloved single edge razors than any other DE.

Good to see your comparison re: 2013 R41
I have one on the way,my first DE purchase in quite a while,I had a feeling I'd like it,if it's in the same ballpark as the OLD I'm going to be pleased.
