Merkur vintage 15C vs Merkur 11C HD open comb razor.

These two open comb razors have been made by Merkur for over a century now, under other names, like Apollo or Hoffritz.

I was lucky enough to get a vintage Merkur 15 C,3 piece razor, and compare it with a new Merkur 11C HD,3 piece razor too as you can see in the following pic :

Both razors are well made and I would say that both have the same head construction and blade gap :

The handle of the Merkur 11C is thicker but also the razor is much heavier than the 15C vintage. The weight of the 11C is :

while the weight of the 15C vintage is :

So there is a difference of 23 grams between the 11C HD and the 15C vintage.

In terms of aggressiveness I find them equal, but the more weight on the 11C HD makes it a little bit more tricky to use, since it doesn't tolerates well to add extra pressure, unless that we want a cut. With the 15C vintage I can add an extra pressure without exposing my skin to cuts or nicks.

The grip in both razors is good, but I prefer the grip of the 11C HD since the handle,as I have pointed earlier,is thicker and easier to hold.

You also can see how the vintage Merkur has a different finish than the rest of the actual Merkur DE razors (more matte and bronze ) while the Merkur 11C HD has a more "shinning" silver finish.

Both razors are great shavers, specially if you are looking for a razor which is more aggressive than the Regular Merkur HD 34C but less than the Merkur 37C HD slant. They have performed really well with Astra blades, but those blades perform well with any razor.I wont use extra sharp blades with both of the razors either.

If you are looking for a good open comb razor, the 11C HD and the 15C could be what you are looking for.

Nice write-up Teiste. I've never use either of these but one of my all time favorite open comb razors was the Mekur 1904 Classic. Wish I would have never sold that razor.

Beautiful pictures. It looks like the 15c might have been finished in nickel.

I guess all 11C razors are now kind of vintage, considering they are now discontinued. I toyed with the idea of purchasing the 15C, but I like the weight of the 11C and would't want anything milder which I'm guessing the 15C might be with the lighter handle...

I had a current production Merkur 15C open-comb that was a very mild razor. I gave it to my grandson, when he expressed an interest in wet shaving.

Should have bought a 11c before they were discontinued. Darn it. Great looking razor.

RE: Merkur vintage 15C vs Merkur 11C HD open comb razor.
I just received a new 11C. They are now rather difficult to find. I was forced to buy it from an Australian vendor and hence paid handsomely for it. I find the 11C a bit mild, but I wanted to have one in pristine condition for my sons to try when they eventually start shaving. I have one that I dropped and bent a tooth on, it still works well perfectly, but the imperfection annoys me so I'll probably get rid of it...

thanks for the post/review Teiste

how does the 1904 OC barber poll , compare to these two razors in aggresiveness...

any hints on if it would be wise to start using my 1904 OC with a Tradere handle?

The Barber Pole has a longer, heavier handle. These characteristics should make it a little more aggressive than the 15C and 11C. Otherwise head and blade exposure are much the same.

What a difference between the vintage and newer (discontinued model).
