Disclaimer: This review is in no way the opinion or endorsement of The Shave Nook

Schwarzweisskeramik is devoted to one thing: warm lather. Here you will find a wide variety of exclusive shaving bowls (scuttles) and other items enabling users to make their shaving experience a comfortable and pleasant one and to achieve better shaving results.

All of their items are wheel-thrown and hand-crafted from stoneware clay. They are fired in an oxidizing atmosphere at 1220°C. The glazes are food, microwave and dishwasher safe.

All of their scuttles feature grooves for greater ease of lather production.

Nearly all of their scuttles feature the unique thumb handle that enables safe and easy handling.

The Scuttles made by Schwarzweisskeramik are double-walled, i.e. there is a hollow between the outer wall and the inner bowl form, into which the warm water is filled via the "brush basin" on the side. When the hollow is filled the water also fills the brush basin and can be accessed there with the brush when additional water is needed. This makes it very easy to vary the water content of your lather.

It is recommendable to pre-warm the scuttle in the way a teapot is, i.e. by initially filling the hollow and the inner bowl with warm water (no hotter than 70°C/160°F) so that the material can store the warmth. After about 5 minutes the water is poured out and replaced by hot water. The scuttle will then keep the lather pleasantly warm throughout the shave.

My personal scuttle is their regular scuttle with the separate soap dish. I use the dish for my grated Speick Stick. I have used and owned most brand of scuttles out there and this is my absolute favorite scuttle. It is easy to lather in and keeps the water warmer than any other scuttle I've owned/tried. The craftsmanship is second to none. They are not cheap, especially considering the shipping cost from Germany, but to me if you are a died hard scuttle user, these are worth the price.

I'm not into scuttles since I lather with cold water, but this is a very handsome piece of equipment.

Excellent review, Johnny! These are beautiful pieces, and I like the design a great deal. Wish I were a scuttle user when I see your pics of the SWK.

Thanks for the review Johnny. Like TRBeck I don't use a scuttle, but your pictures make me intrigued by them. BTW, should you be allowed to own a scuttle that you can't even pronounce the name of who built it? If so then I might not ever own a scuttle.Tongue

They are indeed excellent. I had a XL first but found it to deep, now I have a Schwarzweisskeramik S Scuttle in creme color and enjoy it a lot.
