(A quick note - I wanted to post this in the "Vendors and Shopping Deals" forum, but non-vendors are not allowed to post there. As the Nook does not yet have a forum for us to post our positive feedback about vendors, I have chosen to post here, instead).

I know we've had some discussion about Tabula Rasa on the Shnook. And Teiste has posted a link to one of his Youtube videos on how to face lather this stuff (check it out). I thought I'd post a little more detail and share my recent experience acquiring some of this shaving cream direct from the manufacturer.

I have accumulated so many products by this point, that finishing an entire tub of cream or puck of soap is a very rare occasion, almost worth celebrating. One of the very few products I finished entirely was my tub of Tabula Rasa Dark Lavender shaving cream. As I was contemplating which flavor to try next, a kind forum member PM'd me the contact information for the manufacturer of Tabula Rasa, a very kind and helpful lady named Xenia Trost. Currently, there is only one vendor in the US that sells her products, and this vendor offers three scents: dark lavender, vetiver tangerine, and tea. Ms. Trost also makes three additional "flavors:" olibanum (i.e., frankincense), "creme," and unscented. She informed me that unscented was her first shaving cream, as her goal has been to make products that work for people with even the most sensitive skin.

Here are the six scents she offers and her descriptions:

- Tabula Rasa unscented
- Tabula Rasa Vetiver & Tangerine
- Tabula Rasa "Tea" (Coriander and Bergamot)
- Tabula Rasa "Cream" (with Iso E Super: very tender, but interesting)
- Tabula Rasa "Dark Lavender"
- Tabula Rasa "Olibanum" (Frankincense)

I placed an order for a tub of Olibanum and “Creme,” and they arrived from Germany in under 10 days. Xenia also included samples of Tangerine Vetiver and unscented. There was a slight delay from when I placed my order to the date of shipment because Xenia had to make up a fresh batch of Olibanum. Now that’s the sort of delay I actually like. As expected, the product I received looks extremely fresh, and very different from the Tabula Rasa I’d ordered from the US vendor. I guess Tabula Rasa settles a little when it’s been on the shelf. Mind you, the performance does not degrade with time on the shelf. The cream I had previously ordered performed equally well. But the fresh cream looks so good I could eat it!

On to the ingredients:
Aqua, stearic acid, glycerin, cocos nucifera oil, argania spinoza kernel oil, hordeum vulgare wax, butyrospermum parkii extract, mangifera indica butter, potassium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, sodium borate. I’ll try to translate some of the ingredients: coconut oil, argan nut oil, barley wax, shea butter, mango oil. Talk about some great ingredients.

What about performance? I rate this as the top performing shaving cream in my den, easily. The lather is incredibly slick. Scent is quite subjective, but I haven’t smelled one I don’t like. The only “flavor” I haven’t tried is Tea. What really sets this cream apart from other products is the way my face feels afterward. It has noticeable skin care properties, particularly in the moisturizing department. I usually apply a balm as part of my post-shave routine. I find I don’t need that with Tabula Rasa. An aftershave finishes things off nicely.

In summary, I cannot recommend this product highly enough. And my experience going straight to the manufacturer for the product was positive in every regard.

If Martin de Candre wouldnt be my fav soap,I would say that the 1st position would be between Mitchells Wool Fat and Tabula Rasa, but Tabula Rasa have much better scents.
The Dark Lavender one is one of the best out there, but the Vetiver and Tangerine and the Tea are wonderful too.
One of those products that can create a cult and I understand why.
Thanks for the post Andrew, very good info indeed!

Funny thing is, Teiste, my father was just over for dinner, and I gave him some samples of Tabula Rasa. To make sure he knew how to lather it correctly, I pulled up your Youtube video and showed it to him. Thumbup

Andrew, great review and information. While going through and consolidating my own inventory last weekend, I came across a gifted sample of TR Dark Lavender which I then realized I had never tried. So your post is timely since I knew it has cult-like following. This is now my weekend project!

Thanks for the information Andrew. These creams are on my "to try" list, I just need to clear out some other products first.

I'm happy to provide a sample next time we meet up, Shawn. It's worth at least trying.

After some of the discussions about lavender creams and soaps here, the Dark Lavender was one of the products I considered getting for my first lavender. I decided against it, simply because I didn't want to pay that price for a scent I didn't even know I liked.

I think I may have to put some tangerine/vetiver on my Christmas wish list.

I finished my tub of Tangerine and Vetiver about a month ago,I really enjoyed the scent but I am working on a tub of the Tea now.
My face feels great after shaving with any of these creams and I am glad to see that other people are enjoying them so hopefully they will always be available.

Does anyone know if there are sampler sets available? This a brand I would like to try each scent from before deciding on an order. Maybe someone in the loop with the manufacturer might recommend it.

Thanks,

Go to their contact page and tell them what you're looking for. Xenia and her husband, Eric, are very responsive, and will respond in English. Good folks! When I ordered some Valobra Lavanda from them earlier this year, they also quoted me a lower shipping cost when the site shipping calculator gave me very high shipping rate.

That's right, I contacted Mrs. Xenia and she told me that she had only unscented, dark lavender, olibanum tubs available at the moment. I ordered from her also.

How long did the owners take to respond. I sent them a mail a couple of days back and did not get a response.

Could someone describe some of the scents they have tried?

They may be on vacation. It took about a week to hear back when I contacted Xenia - I think she was away at that time, too. Don't worry - when you do hear back, she is very quick about filling your order and sending the product out.

I have at least 812 products stocked that I haven't tried yet, at least twice as much on my "to try list" and now I had to go and read this? I am literally salivating... Shave my life! Angry

The Olibanum cream is superb! So easy to lather and is very slick and cushioning.
